February Tribe of the Month

February 3, 2016

Through the Y Guides program, tribes become closer and more connected to each other and the community. During the first two years, tribes are focused on growing and creating a bond that can last a lifetime. During the Third Year, the year of service, tribes are encouraged to go out into the community and give back to others.

TRIBE OF THE MONTH: Mighty CUbs

We are excited to announce the Mighty Cubs as our February Tribe of the Month. At the end of their first year in Y Guides, they had raised over $250 to help Wake County Habitat for Humanity! Initially, the tribe was very eager to help build homes, but due to age restrictions, raising money was the most valuable impact the tribe could have for the organization.

The Mighty Cubs continued to search for opportunities to give back to our community, which led to a collection of food donations for the Eastern NC Food Bank Meals Drive. As a result, 1,000 meals (equivalent to over 200 pounds of food!) were given to families in the Triangle area during the holidays. Throughout the process of collecting donations for Eastern NC Food Bank, the tribe was able to assist with restocking shelves and gain a better understanding of their community member’s daily challenges for adequate healthcare, food, and well-being.

"Helping out in the Eastern NC Food Bank was the most memorable service event the tribe participated in. It was a tangible experience and involved community work and educational games around what it is like to not always be able to provide for your family. The service work provided the opportunity to meet the beneficiaries of our volunteer work."

The Mighty Cubs also collected toys for the Toys for Tot drive this past Christmas. This became an awesome experience that helped the guides appreciate all the gifts they received during the holidays and better understand the situations of those less fortunate than themselves.

"The Mighty Cubs learned the value of donations and giving their time to others in the community to help improve their situation. More families were able to have efficient meals and hopefully have less to worry about during the holidays so they could enjoy their families."

The Mighty Cubs have become closer as a tribe through their works of service. They reflect on how lucky they are to meet once a month to play sports or games, have snacks, and spend time together. While these acts of service have allowed the guides to become more appreciative, they have also allowed the Mighty Cubs to grow stronger as a tribe and build individual character.

We asked the Mighty Cubs if they plan to continue doing acts of service in the community and they responded with a resounding, "Absolutely! Everyone should give back to their community and help others in need. Having an 'Attitude of Gratitude' makes the community better for all of us!"

Thank you Mighty Cubs for all that you do!
