Y-Guides Rafting Frequently Asked Questions
What is this rafting trip all about?
The rafting trip is an add-on for the Camp Rockmont weekend. Running Wolf and his children have been organizing this trip since its beginning 34 years ago. We love giving dads and kids an incredible day of fun in the sun on the river to remember for the rest of their lives.
You will arrive at camp Thursday evening and spend Thursday night in your assigned cabin or tent. Then after a delicious breakfast Friday morning, we will bus you over to Blue Heron Whitewater for an awesome day of rafting and lunch on the river. We will bus you back to camp in the late afternoon. Dinner is on your own for both Thursday and Friday nights.
How do I sign up?
You can sign up HERE. You must pay to reserve your rafting spot. There is an option to pay by credit card or PayPal AFTER you have submitted your rafting sign up form. Registration for rafting will remain open until Sunday, July 31st unless spots fill up before then.
How much does the rafting trip cost?
The cost for the rafting trip is $127 per participant. So one father and one child is $254. This includes Thursday night at camp, breakfast at Camp Rockmont Friday morning, a charter bus to Blue Heron Whitewater and back to camp, and an amazing day rafting the French Broad with lunch on the river. Children CANNOT raft without their dads.
Is this rafting trip safe?
The French Broad River is what is known as a class 2/3 river, which means it has small rapids. Kids as young as 8 years old can raft the French Broad. We have safely taken over 20,000 Y-Guide participants including our own children and grandchildren down the river in the 30+ years we have been offering this activity.
Are there any Covid protocols?
We will follow the state and local guidelines in place at the time of the rafting trips.
Do I need to sign up for the weekend at Camp Rockmont to go rafting?
Yes, you MUSTsign up for the weekend at Camp Rockmont to go rafting. The rafting trip is an add-on to the weekend. You will raft on the Friday before your assigned weekend.
What if it rains?
The rafting trip is rain or shine.
If I need to cancel, can I get a refund?
No, there are no refunds. We turn all our money over to the vendors a month in advance to reserve our spot. So we cannot offer refunds.
What should I wear?
Wear clothes including shoes which you do not mind getting wet. We suggest wearing bathing suits or shorts and a swim shirt or rash guard. On cooler days we do not recommend wearing cotton because cotton gets cold and clingy when wet. You can also wear a paddle jacket or waterproof jacket on cooler days.
You MUST wear shoes which will stay on your feet in the water. Water shoes or old tennis shoes are great. NOFLIP FLOPS OR CROCS.
PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) and helmets will be provided by Blue Heron Whitewater.
What else should I bring?
We suggest you bring sunscreen, a towel, a change of clothes, and money for souvenirs and pictures of your rafting trip. There is a changing room and a shower at Blue Heron to get dry before the bus trip back to camp. The bus driver stays with your bus at all times while you are having fun on the river. So you can safely leave your items on the bus.
How do you handle allergies or other medical conditions?
You should make a note of any allergies or other medical conditions we should be aware of on the rafting sign up form. The rafting company can make sure there are non-allergy food choices for lunch. Please bring any items you might need with you (e.g. Epi-pen, inhaler, special food). You should also let your rafting guide know of any medical conditions when you get on the bus.
Can I drive myself to the rafting company?
No, you cannot drive yourself. There is very limited parking space at Blue Heron Whitewater, and we need that space to fit the buses. The time on the bus ride is also used to sign waivers and to watch an important safety video which must be watched by all rafters before their rafting trip.
Do I need to sign up separately for Thursday night at camp?
No, you do not need to sign up for Thursday night at camp. Thursday night is included when you sign up for rafting. No separate sign up is needed.
Where will I stay Thursday night?
You will stay Thursday night in the same cabin or tent you have been assigned for the weekend. So if you are in a cabin for the weekend, you will be in the same cabin Thursday night. If you are in a tent for the weekend, you will be in the same tent Thursday night. If you are doing the day-only option, you are responsible for your own lodging Thursday night.
What is my bus loading time?
The buses have staggered loading times on Friday morning. You will be assigned a bus and a loading time when you check in at Camp Rockmont on Thursday evening. If you arrive at camp late Thursday night, there is a camp bulletin board at the entrance to Camp Rockmont where you can check for your bus loading time.
Will I be on the same bus and raft as my Crew?
You will be on the same bus as your Crew. Rafts hold 4-6 rafters and one rafting guide. Rafting guides will help Crews divide up into groups on the bus ride to Blue Heron Whitewater.
If you would like to be on the same bus as someone in a different Crew, please make a note which includes the other dad’s name and Crew on the rafting sign up form so that we can make sure to put you on the same bus.
What happened to the Combo Rafting and Zipline trip?
Unfortunately we did not have enough people sign up to keep it going. You can always sign up for Thursday night at camp and book your own Combo adventure.
What if I still have questions?
You can contact Running Wolf (Buddy Fowler) at ArapahoeAdventureEvents@gmail.com with any other questions you have.
