Through the Y Guides program, tribes become closer and more connected to each other and the community. During the first two years, tribes are focused on growing and creating a bond that can last a lifetime. During the third year, the year of service, tribes are encouraged to go out and give back to others.
Each month we will highlight a tribe that has given back. Whether it is through raising donations for the Annual Campaign, participating in our Stop Hunger Now event or visiting a nursing home, these tribes have made a big difference to those around them.

March’s Tribe of the Month is the Holly Springs Warhawks! They have gone above and beyond in the community, from writing personalized letters to deployed troops, to hosting an entire Corn Hole Tournament to raise $3,500 for Annual Campaign! Through their acts of service, the little Guides were able to identify the importance of giving back to families less fortunate and associate Christmas with community service and lending a helping hand.
GIVING BACK
- Assisted Holly Springs Food Collection by knocking door to door within neighborhoods and asking families to provide food for families less fortunate. Each little Guide explained why this was important and the following Sunday, the tribe collected over 800 lbs of food! Little Guides analyzed all the food that was collected and reflected, “Dad this is really cool helping people out. Do you think they will eat all the food?”
- Identified a local family in need that was having a challenging time during the holiday season. The tribe (along with the wonderful help of the spouses) provided a Thanksgiving dinner and purchased two bikes and clothing for their children.
- Facilitated a learning opportunity for the little Guides to understand the importance of supporting the troops. The tribe wrote personalized letters to troops currently deployed to express their appreciation of their efforts.
- Holly Springs Warhawks planned and hosted an entire Corn Hole Tournament open to the public. They had 30 teams compete for prizes as well as a raffle to raise funds for Annual Campaign. The event was a huge success and the tribe was able to donate $3,500 to Annual Campaign!
Here is the time lapse video for the Corn Hole Tournament:
“Walking with my son door to door to share why our tribe was collecting food donations was noted as one of the most memorable acts of service. You could see that with each house it became a little more personal to him.”
Through the tribe’s acts of kindness, the tribe raised awareness in the community and witnessed the community stepping up to help others. This reinforced the efforts that a few people can help many. Little Guide "Running Wolf" learned, “It can be fun to help people and my favorite service project was to see how many people gave food, since some people don’t have any.”
